BiKA – Participation of Children in Day Care: The Child Right Participation as an Entitlement and in Reality

With the study “Participation of Children in Daycare” (BiKA), the quality in daycare with regard to the participation of young children was examined from 2018 to 2020 – by a research team of the Potsdam University of Applied Sciences and the PädQUIS gGmbH. With a focus on the crèche sector, video-recorded situations were analysed and the educational professionals and parents were asked about their experiences and assessments. The results of the study show a great need for action with regard to children’s rights of self-determination and co-determination in the day care centre. Especially in the highly structured meal situations, it becomes clear how much the children’s rights to participation, protection and promotion are interdependent and that their realisation is decisive for a child-friendly day-to-day life for the youngest. Bianka Pergande is Executive Director of the German League for the Child and spokesperson for the National Coalition – Network for the Implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child Germany. She coordinated the study on the part of the University of Applied Sciences and will discuss selected results of the study in her lecture.
