Research Topic Early Mathematical Education – From the development of mathematical competencies to the professionalisation of educators
There are some challenges in realising early mathematical education that is both appropriate for children and fits the subject matter. In some areas, there are research findings that help making sound observations about and help offering adequate support for mathematical learning processes. However, in other areas, e.g. early geometrical learning, there are only few findings concerning such matters. Another challenge is the education of early childhood educators. Often, early math education is not a scheduled course content at universities/colleges. (Therefore - wofür steht das “dafür”?) We must identify the competencies educators need to foster mathematical learning processes that are adequate to both subject matter and child. Some correlations and relevant factors for early mathematical learning have been discovered, yet there are many open questions. The talk will discuss the scientific basis for early math education. Research perspectives will be presented.
